THURSDAY: GILLIAN WEARING

Gillian Wearing // Signs that Say What You Want Them To Say And Not Signs that Say What Someone Else Wants You to Say (1992-3)

In this work, Wearing approached people on the streets of London and asked them to write something down on the card. She then photographed them as they displayed it in front of them. It seems like an almost cathartic experience for the people who took part, with the act of writing on the card acting as a confessional of private emotions made public.
